Five of the Most Powerful Blades in DC Comics
In a universe (sorry, Multiverse) boasting the likes of Superman (and Wonder Woman, and Darkseid, and anyone who could potentially separate colliding planets – with their hands), how can a simple, terrestrial blade be anything but useless?
In the world(s) of DC Comics, weapons are also significantly enhanced, empowered, or capable of splitting the sun.
Doubting the efficacy of ostensibly simple but incredibly powerful blades? Then take a look at five of the most powerful blades (and dangerously sharp weapons) in DC Comics.
The Batarang (and not the dull, skull-thumping variety)
Yes, Batman wields Batarangs that are very much on-brand boomerangs – they’re accurate, but very blunt instruments that normally “bonk” criminals into submission. But when things get serious, Batman utilizes slightly smaller, very sharp versions – iterations where the ‘rang’s entire wingspan is a meticulously sharpened, ouch-inducing edge.

One of the first implementations of these rather painful ranged weapons occurred during 1986’s The Dark Knight Returns. Since this older Batman lacked the stamina (and tolerance) to be...elegant in his crime-stomping endeavors, he relied on immediately effective methods – methods that truly hobbled/disabled/bled out Gotham’s unfortunate criminal element. Just ask the Joker, who had quite a few protruding graphically from his powdered face and jacketed torso.
Made from nearly unbreakable alloys developed in secret by Wayne-Tech, these shuriken-like Bat-blades can reduce future crime stats by remaining impaled in perps, which immediately warns other perps when said perp is found nearly dead in a perpetually rain-soaked alleyway.
The God Killer Sword
When Hephaestus, the Greek God of Blacksmiths and Inventions, put a hit on the Greek Titan, Lapetus, he fashioned an immortal-killing sword to arm and empower his “hired” assassin – Deathstroke.
The God Killer Sword has many enchantments/powers, enabling its wielder to be on equal footing with – and effectively slay – gods and other ostensibly invincible, magical beings. Attributes include enhancing the wielder’s strength, the absorption and redirection of energy, a telepathic link between sword and wielder, the ability to shapeshift, and once again to get across how powerful this thing is – the ability to kill gods, which it most certainly did.

Deathstroke eventually returned the sword, but it would repeatedly fall into the wrong hands, used dangerously by the likes of Grail, Darkseid’s daughter, and Wonder Woman’s preeminent foe, Cheetah.
Soultaker
Primary weapon of the costumed hero (technically, Outsider), Katana, the Soultaker sword does exactly what the name implies – it absorbs/traps the souls of those it strikes down. And one such victim, Maseo, was Katana’s husband (who she communicates with through the sword. And yes, if you don’t know the backstory, a woman arguing with her sword is certainly unseemly).

In other continuity, Soultaker is the totem sword of the Sword Clan, one of several clans making up the Outsiders. And Katana, being Soultaker’s wielder, is leader of the Sword Clan, and granted immortality as long as said sword is held.
Michael’s Sword
In DC Comics, devils and angels truly exist (just ask John Constantine). And one of God’s foremost angels, Michael, holds the most powerful sword in existence.

Capable of all the legendary biblical wonders and then some, Michael used this sword against the demons of Hell during Lucifer’s failed uprising. Eons (upon eons) later, the sword was used by Zauriel (pictured), an angel who once fled his particular host due to the machinations of more warlike angels. It was also used by Frankenstein, who, over the course of his long life, began a career in superheroism.
The Trident of Neptune
Wielded by Aquaman, the Trident of Neptune was originally created by, and used by, the God of the Sea himself, Neptune. Passed down throughout generations of Atlantis’ royal lineage, the Trident of Neptune grants the wielder complete control over Atlantean machinery and infrastructure.
Beyond a master control system operating the architecture of Atlantis, the Trident of Neptune can manipulate all forms of water. And when I say “manipulate,” I mean “redirect the flow of entire oceans with a simple exertion of will.”
When used as a bladed melee weapon, the trident can penetrate most surfaces, including Darkseid’s rocky, godly hide. And as a ranged weapon, Aquaman’s trusty poker can control weather, fire bolts of energy, and even alter organic matter.
Are There Several More Powerful Blades in DC Comics?
Oh, absolutely. In fact, Azrael might be wielding one right now. Want to add to our list? Then simply scroll down, and add a comment. And then, add another.
