Five of the Most Powerful Blades in Videogame History

Video games become infinitely more interesting when your persistently perishing character wields an exceptional, magical, and perilously procured super-sword.

Wondering which blades dash the most enemy pixels in your favorite video games? Then prepare yourself for the following list of five powerful video game blades that regularly turn the tide amidst unrelenting boss assaults.

The Buster Sword (Final Fantasy VII)

Cloud Strife’s preeminent weapon in Final Fantasy VII, this incredibly large and uniquely shaped sword is iconic enough to represent the entire Final Fantasy franchise.

In fact, this man-sized sword is so darn iconic, it appeared alongside Cloud in the Super Smash Bros. series and Kingdom Hearts games.

It doesn’t start out ultra-powerful, but consistent upgrades create one heck of a destructive video game weapon (unless you prefer Hardedge, which deals considerable attack damage while sacrificing magic power).

The Netherite Axe (Minecraft)

Yes, the Diamond Axe was all the rage in Minecraft. But then came…Netherite! With this newer, especially powerful alloy, an axe crafted with Netherite is the most powerful melee weapon in Minecraft. Boasting a base attack damage of +10 and a durability score of 2031, the Netherite Axe can disable shields and properly hack attackers (sometimes in a single blow).

How does one effectively craft a Netherite Axe? By opening the Upgrade Menu, placing one Diamond Axe in the first box, and then a Netherite ingot in the second. Where does one find Netherite? Tell me – how much do you really hate the Nether?

Frostmourne (World of Warcraft)

Held by the dreaded Lich King – and later by the Lich King-possessed Arthas Menethil – this two-handed longsword carved untold destruction across Azeroth.

The legendary mourneblade, already a terribly powerful bladed weapon, could imprison souls and recreate the living as mindless zombies. Thankfully, the Lich King (and Frostmourne) were defeated (and destroyed) by Tirion Fordring (one of the five original paladins from the Order of the Silver Hand, and wielder of the purified blade, Ashbringer).

Later, during the third invasion of the Burning Legion, the shards of Frostmourne were fashioned into the “Blades of the Fallen Prince” (courtesy of a heroic death knight). The names of these newly forged blades? Frost Reaper and Icebringer.

The Blades of Chaos (God of War)

Fashioned in the pits of Hades by the God of War himself (Ares), the Blades of Chaos are a pair of chained blades permanently seared into Kratos’ forearms. Why? To remind Kratos of his undying oath to the very demanding God of War – a bond that can only be broken by Ares, or when Kratos’ servitude is officially ended.

Kratos used these powerful, always aflame blades to defeat the Barbarian King, Alrik, and unfortunately, murder his wife and daughter (while lost in a mindless rage courtesy of Ares).

After defeating Ares (because he totally had it coming) and replacing him as the God of War, Kratos gained eternal ownership of the blades, but vowed to never use them again (until he had no choice but to use them again).

Dragonbane (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim)

How does one acquire the fabled Dragonbane sword? By successfully reaching the Sky Haven Temple during the “Alduin’s Wall” quest. And for your trouble, you’ll also snag the magnificent Blades armor.

Why is the Dragonbane sword so gosh darn formidable in Skyrim? Because it deals extra damage to dragons (which is especially helpful, considering you’ll happen upon one or two).

Technically referred to as an Akaviri katana – a sword used by the Blades faction during their service to the Septim Empire – this powerful dragon destroyer emits electric sparks when dealing said damage.

Are they truly the most powerful blades in video games?

I would consider this a healthy sampling of the very blades that saved gamers’ collective bacon. Have a few more ideas? Want to disparage ours? List your favorite ultra-powerful slicing sticks in the comments (below).
